Tribulus Terrestris herb

Meet the herb

Tribulus is a plant that grows in warmer climates and tropical areas around the world. The plant produces a spiny covered fruit and both root and fruit have been used medicinally. It has been used in traditional medicine for many years for a variety of ailments and is traditionally considered an aphrodisiac and supporter of vitality.

History

Tribulus has been used in traditional medicine in Greece, China and India, and was recommended for fertility, erectile dysfunction and low libido (1). In Traditional Chinese Medicine it was used to support liver and kidney health. In Ayurveda it was used as an aphrodisiac, diuretic and nervine, and in Greek medicine as a diuretic and mood supporter.

It was widely popular as an ergogenic (anabolic) aid in the 1970s and 1980s and was used by Bulgarian athletes who put their physical improvements in strength down to using it (1). It has more recently been a popular supplement for male health and athletic performance in western countries as an enhancer of libido and an adaptogenic aid for healthy and physically active men (1).

Key actives

Most common compounds include the saponins and flavonoids which appear to be largely responsible for its potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-ageing properties (9).

The steroidal saponin protodioscin has been shown to play a role in the nitric oxide system pathway and may boost nitric oxide production which is important for widening blood vessels and increasing blood flow to muscles. It’s increasingly believed to be one of the main compounds responsible for tribulus’ performance benefits.
