Meet the herb

Passion flower is a popular herb that gets its name from its beautiful flower. It is a climbing vine with purple and white flowers native to the south-eastern United States and Central and South America.

Famed for its calming effects, passion flower is considered a potent nervine herb that can be used to support nervous restlessness, sleep, anxiety and pain, and is an ideal choice to help the body unwind after a busy day.

History

Passion flower has been revered as a medicinal plant for over 2,000 years. Sixteenth-century Spanish explorers in South America learned of passionflower. The plant was then brought to Europe, where it became widely cultivated and was introduced to European folk medicine.

Medicinal use of the herb did not begin until the late nineteenth century in the United States, when passion flower was used to treat nervous restlessness and gastrointestinal spasms. It was also used traditionally to provide relief to women who are experiencing menopausal symptoms.

Modern day herbalists recommend it as a powerful nervine tonic to treat stress, anxiety and to help the mind prepare for a restful night’s sleep.
