Meet the herb

NitroX is a blend of tribulus, cordyceps and beetroot: these bio-activated herbs and mushrooms are designed to increase nitric oxide levels, support sports performance, and the physical challenges of daily life.

Tribulus is a plant that grows in warmer climates and tropical areas around the world. The plant produces a spiny covered fruit and both root and fruit have been used medicinally.

Cordyceps’ benefits have been celebrated for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Known for its wide range of health-promoting properties, it has become a sought-after natural remedy for various ailments.

Beetroot is a popular vegetable in many parts of the world: it has a broad nutritional profile and a specific affinity for the blood. Traditionally used as a food, it is now a popular supplement for supporting sports performance.

History

Tribulus was widely popular as an ergogenic (anabolic) aid in the 1970s and 1980s and was used to support physical performance by Bulgarian athletes who put their improvements in strength down to using it (1). It has more recently been a popular supplement for male health and athletic performance in western countries as an enhancer of libido and an adaptogenic aid for healthy and physically active men (1).

Also known as the ‘emperor’s mushroom’, cordyceps has long been used in religious ceremonies and linked to longevity and immortality. The first people to discover its benefits initially observed animals eating the mushroom and growing strong in the process. Farmers and herders then began to use cordyceps to make tonics and teas to promote strength and vitality.

Beetroot has been used since Roman times to treat various medical conditions; it was also used as a blood tonic and an aphrodisiac. It has become popular in sports nutrition in recent decades due to its performance-enhancing effects.

Benefits

Muscle strength

Studies have shown tribulus alleviated muscle soreness and promoted anaerobic performance (2). Some studies have noted increases in testosterone levels and muscular power (3).

Energy and fatigue

Studies show increases in oxygen uptake, aerobic capacity, and resistance to fatigue with cordyceps use (4). Cordyceps increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a molecule that stores and transfers energy within cells, helping to improve energy levels, and reduce fatigue (5).

Endurance

Beetroot has been shown to improve endurance by increasing efficiency, time to exhaustion and may improve performance at maximum oxygen uptake (6).

Key actives

Tribulus contains protodioscin which is a steroidal saponin that has been shown to play a role in the nitric oxide system pathway and may boost nitric oxide production. This is important for widening blood vessels and increasing blood flow to muscles, it is increasingly believed to be one of the main compounds responsible for tribulus’ performance benefits.

Cordyceps is rich in cordycepin which has a close similarity to adenosine so some enzymes can’t distinguish between the two. Adenosine is central to energy metabolism, and it is needed to make ATP which is the body’s energy currency.

Beetroot is rich in nitrates to support stamina and endurance (7).

Contraindications:

There are some groups where caution is required: children and those nursing, pregnant (or considering pregnancy), and on medication or under medical supervision should consult their healthcare practitioner before using our supplements.
