Meet the mushroom
Benefits
Brain health: Studies have found lion’s mane stimulates production of nerve growth factor (NGF) which helps to maintain the neurons, which are the brain cells responsible for helping us to process and transmit information. It is useful for learning and memory and helps to optimise neurogenesis; the creation and growth of new brain cells, making it an ideal nootropic for supporting focus and productivity (1).
Mental health: Studies suggest lion’s mane can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by modulating the levels of specific neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, which play crucial roles in regulating mood, motivation, and stress response (2).
Energy: Cordyceps can naturally support energy levels. Studies show increases in oxygen uptake, aerobic capacity, and resistance to fatigue (3).
Immunity: Research has shown cordyceps increases the production of protective immune cells and enhances immune response (4). Reishi mushrooms are known for their potential to enhance the immune system. Fermentation of reishi promotes its immunostimulatory activity (5).
Key actives
Cordycepin: Has a close similarity to adenosine so some enzymes can’t distinguish between the two. Adenosine is central to energy metabolism; it is needed to make ATP which is the body’s energy currency. Cordycepin is also a powerful antiviral compound. Fermentation significantly increases cordycepin and antioxidant content (7).
Hericenones: Lion’s mane fruiting body is rich in hericenones which are believed to contribute to the mushroom’s cognitive-enhancing properties. They have strong antibacterial activity and help stimulate the generation of nerve growth factor (NGF) which is a neuropeptide that helps to maintain neurons and supports optimal brain functioning.
Antioxidants: Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.
Beta-glucans: High amounts of polysaccharides including enhanced beta-glucans which have been shown to modulate immune function (8).
Triterpenes: Reishi spores contain 200% more triterpenes than the fruiting body. Triterpenoids have been reported to be hepatoprotective, anti-histaminic, and be valuable for cardiovascular health amongst other actions (9).
