Meet the mushroom

Cordyceps’ benefits have been celebrated for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Also known as the ‘emperor’s mushroom’, cordyceps has been long used in religious ceremonies and linked to longevity and immortality.

Lion’s mane is a powerhouse of nutrients and revered in traditional medicine. Also called ‘the mountain priest mushroom’, in recent years it has been investigated for its beneficial effects on cognitive health, with numerous studies supporting the claims made by traditional medicine.

Reishi spores are produced as the reishi mushroom completes its life cycle. The spores contain the highest concentration of active triterpenes, unique to the reishi mushroom.

History

The first people to discover cordyceps’ benefits initially observed animals eating the mushroom and growing strong in the process. Farmers and herders then began to use cordyceps to make tonics and teas to promote strength and vitality. It was traditionally used for respiratory health and has also been used to support kidney health, and to enhance libido and reproductive function.

Historically, lion’s mane was reserved for royalty, but it has been used for centuries for its anti-microbial and immunological activity. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) it was used as a tonic for supporting overall health and longevity.

Ancient texts and folklore often refer to the Reishi mushroom as the ‘Mushroom of Immortality’, underscoring its revered status. In traditional Chinese medicine, its name is often associated with healing, longevity, and immortality.

Benefits

Myco Blend

Brain health: Studies have found lion’s mane stimulates production of nerve growth factor (NGF) which helps to maintain the neurons, which are the brain cells responsible for helping us to process and transmit information. It is useful for learning and memory and helps to optimise neurogenesis; the creation and growth of new brain cells, making it an ideal nootropic for supporting focus and productivity (1).

Mental health: Studies suggest lion’s mane can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by modulating the levels of specific neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, which play crucial roles in regulating mood, motivation, and stress response (2).

Energy: Cordyceps can naturally support energy levels. Studies show increases in oxygen uptake, aerobic capacity, and resistance to fatigue (3).

Immunity: Research has shown cordyceps increases the production of protective immune cells and enhances immune response (4). Reishi mushrooms are known for their potential to enhance the immune system. Fermentation of reishi promotes its immunostimulatory activity (5).

Key actives

Cordycepin: Has a close similarity to adenosine so some enzymes can’t distinguish between the two. Adenosine is central to energy metabolism; it is needed to make ATP which is the body’s energy currency. Cordycepin is also a powerful antiviral compound. Fermentation significantly increases cordycepin and antioxidant content (7).

Hericenones: Lion’s mane fruiting body is rich in hericenones which are believed to contribute to the mushroom’s cognitive-enhancing properties. They have strong antibacterial activity and help stimulate the generation of nerve growth factor (NGF) which is a neuropeptide that helps to maintain neurons and supports optimal brain functioning.

Antioxidants: Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Beta-glucans: High amounts of polysaccharides including enhanced beta-glucans which have been shown to modulate immune function (8).

Triterpenes: Reishi spores contain 200% more triterpenes than the fruiting body. Triterpenoids have been reported to be hepatoprotective, anti-histaminic, and be valuable for cardiovascular health amongst other actions (9).

Contraindications

There are some groups where caution is required: children and those nursing, pregnant (or considering pregnancy), and on medication or under medical supervision should consult their healthcare practitioner before using our supplements. Specific known contraindications (this list is not exhaustive):

Cordyceps should not be taken in combination with anticoagulants, anti-diabetic medication, and immunosuppressants. (Caution with hormone dependant cancers (prostate and breast) due to increased levels of oestrogen and testosterone).

Lion’s mane should not be taken in combination with anticoagulants, anti-diabetic medication. (Caution is required with asthma and other allergic conditions. Erinacine E is a potent agonist of the kappa opioid receptor with potential hallucinogenic properties).

Reishi spores should not be taken in combination with anticoagulants, anti-diabetic medication, blood pressure medication, or those with low blood pressure, and immunosuppressants.
