Meet the herb


Milk thistle is a flowering herb related to the daisy and ragweed family, it is a traditional European herb that promotes healthy liver function and supports detoxification.

It is high in antioxidants to neutralise free radical damage, helps protect healthy liver cells and aids in the production of new cells.

History

Milk thistle use dates to Ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece and it was traditionally used to treat liver and gallbladder disorders. Herbalists and physicians alike used milk thistle for hundreds of years to treat a wide range of liver pathologies, including fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and to protect the liver from environmental toxins (1).

Liver health: Milk thistle is the most well-researched plant in the treatment of liver disease (2). It revitalises and strengthens the liver, and supports effective detoxification.

Healthy digestion: Milk thistle has also been used for centuries as a natural treatment for upper gastrointestinal tract and digestive problems(3), and is a useful herb for times of overindulgence.

Neuroprotection: Milk thistle has been traditionally used as a natural remedy for the treatment of various ailments including neurological disorders for over 2000 years, studies suggest it shows promise in a variety of neurodegenerative disorders where neuroinflammation and oxidative stress are pathologically relevant to disease progression (4).

Healthy skin: Due to its powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and liver supporting effects it could be beneficial for problem skin conditions like acne. One study found a decrease in total acne lesions by 53% with silymarin the active constituent of milk thistle (5).

Key actives


Silymarin is the main active in milk thistle: it is anti-inflammatory and a potent antioxidant that supports rejuvenation in the whole body from the liver to the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic benefits and has been used for various liver disorders (6).

Contraindications 

There are some groups where caution is required: children and those nursing, pregnant (or considering pregnancy), and on medication or under medical supervision should consult their healthcare practitioner before using our supplements. Specific known contraindications (this list is not exhaustive):

Milk thistle should not be taken in combination with tamoxifen, diabetic medication, sirolimus, raloxifene, P-glycoprotein substrates, morphine, blood thinners, ledipasvir, sofosbuvir, antipsychotics, seizure medication, halothane, birth control pills or HRT, antipsychotics, phenytoin, and medications changed by the liver.
