Meet the herb
Maca is a cruciferous vegetable and related to cauliflower, broccoli and kale. Originally found in plateaus high in the Andes mountains, it has a long history of traditional use in Peru both as a culinary ingredient and traditional medicine for over 3,000 years. It has traditionally been used to support fertility and libido and is sometimes referred to as Peruvian ginseng.
History
Maca was highly prized in traditional Peruvian culture and considered sacred in its fermented form. It was used in ceremonies to bring strength and health to all those who consumed it, and to enhance energy, balance, and wellbeing.
Traditionally maca was eaten baked, used in soups and fermented into a drink called maca chichi. Inca warriors believed maca root would boost stamina and strength before going into battle, and it was considered highly valuable.
Benefits

Menopause: Studies have found maca can reduce menopausal symptoms including hot flashes and night sweats (3). Another study in 2015 found that maca could reduce symptoms of depression in postmenopausal women (4).
