Meet the herb

LVR-Plex is a blend of milk thistle, artichoke and turmeric, these bio-activated herbs are designed to support liver health.

Artichoke is a perennial plant of the sunflower family and is often consumed as a food. It has been prized for centuries as a potent liver and blood cleanser.

Milk thistle is a flowering herb related to the daisy and ragweed family, it is a traditional European herb that promotes healthy liver function and supports detoxification.

Turmeric is a popular herb derived from the roots of the plant curcuma longa, found mostly in India and Southern Asia. Turmeric has been used medically for purported anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, digestive complaints and liver conditions.

History

Artichoke is a plant with a long history of use: ancient Romans and Greeks cultivated it as a food crop for centuries, and it was a delicacy and aphrodisiac. It was traditionally used to support normal functioning of the digestive tract and liver, as well as supporting healthy skin, bile flow, and cholesterol metabolism.

Milk thistle use dates to Ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece and it was traditionally used to treat liver and gallbladder disorders. Herbalists and physicians alike used milk thistle for hundreds of years to treat a wide range of liver pathologies, including fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and to protect the liver from environmental toxins (1).

Turmeric has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years in ceremony and as medicine. It has been used traditionally for many conditions including indigestion, upper respiratory infections and liver diseases (2).

Benefits

Liver Health

Artichoke stimulates the production of bile in the liver, and its flow into the duodenum, which helps to bind and excrete fats and cholesterol from the body. It has also been used as an herbal remedy for digestive health. It can have protective effects against liver disorders by reducing the production of reactive oxygen species and increasing the activity of glutathione peroxidase.

Reducing liver enzymes

Artichoke has been shown to lower blood levels of liver enzymes which can indicate liver issues (3). Milk thistle normalises liver function and it seems that turmeric might also be effective in improving levels of liver enzymes (4).

Detoxification

Milk thistle is the most well-researched plant in the treatment of liver disease (5). It revitalises and strengthens the liver, and supports effective detoxification.

Anti-inflammatory

Turmeric is under active evaluation as an anti-inflammatory agent, for the therapy of liver diseases (2).

Key actives

The most active antioxidant ingredients in artichoke include cynarin, chlorogenic acid, and caffeic acid, and could explain its therapeutic effects on biochemical and liver biomarkers (6).

Silymarin is the main active in milk thistle: it is anti-inflammatory and a potent antioxidant that supports rejuvenation in the whole body from the liver to the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic benefits and has been used for various liver disorders (7).

Turmeric has antioxidant properties (1), protecting the body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. It has been extensively studied for its hepatoprotective effects, and its curcuminoids may offer promise to prevent oxidative stress-related liver disorder (8).
