Lemon balm is a fragrant, sweet-smelling herb and a member of the mint family, with similar carminative properties. The herb is native to Europe, North Africa, and West Asia, but it’s grown around the world. Its leaves are used for culinary and medicinal purposes.

History

Lemon balm has been used for over 2000 years as a nervine herb to support cognitive function and mood. It is one of the primary herbs in Shamanic herbal alchemy, and traditionally used to calm the nervous system.

Also called the “elixir of life”, it is rich in many active plant compounds that help to support inner balance and peace, it was used  in many ancient cultures and was praised by herbalists for its uplifting qualities

The leaves of lemon balm are used in Iranian folk medicine for their digestive, carminative, antispasmodic, sedative, analgesic, tonic, and diuretic properties, as well as for functional gastrointestinal disorders (1).
