Meet the herb
Garlic is a member of the Amaryllidaceae family and cultivated globally. Garlic has been used for centuries in both cooking and traditional medicine and revered for its potent protective and antimicrobial properties.
History
Throughout ancient history, garlic was widely used for its health and medicinal properties. There is documented evidence of its use by many major civilisations including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.
It was used for medicinal purposes in epidemics and was one of the earliest “performance-enhancing” substances. It was used by ancient civilisations to reduce fatigue and improve the work capacity of labourers, Olympic athletes in ancient Greece also used it to support performance (1).
Benefits
Heart health: Studies have shown that fermented garlic may reduce indicators of heart disease, including levels in the blood of total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and triglycerides. It may also increase HDL (good) cholesterol (2).
Immunity: Studies suggest that fermented garlic supplementation may enhance immune cell function and may be partly responsible for the reduced severity of colds and flu reported (3).
Anti-microbial: In addition to supporting the immune system, it may help prevent viruses from entering host cells or from replicating within cells (3). It also shows inhibitory effects against pathogenic bacteria, yeast and fungi (4).
Blood-pressure: A meta-analysis found garlic supplements reduced blood pressure in people with high blood pressure with fewer side effects than blood pressure medications (5).
Key actives
In recent years, considerable attention has been given to its main bioactive compounds, particularly polyphenols, flavonoids, flavanols, tannins, saponins, polysaccharides, sulfur-containing compounds, and enzymes (4).
S‐Allylcysteine, is produced in large amounts during garlic fermentation and is a key compound responsible for the multiple pharmacological activities of garlic.
Fermented garlic is packed full of various antioxidants that help to fight free radicals, reduce inflammation and prevent oxidative damage to our cells
