Meet the herb

Wisdom is a blend of holy basil, gotu kola, matcha tea & lion’s mane; these bio-activated herbs and mushrooms are designed to support mental clarity and balanced cognitive pathways.

Holy basil is a green leafy plant native to India. It is also known as ‘The Incomparable One’ and is principally used for immunity and emotional wellbeing.

Gotu kola is an herb in the parsley family, it is one of the main herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine for revitalising nerves and brain cells. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it has been used for mood disorders including depression (1).

Matcha green tea is powdered whole leaf tea, it is grown under shade during its final few weeks before harvest and is prized for its superior antioxidant content and catechins.

Lion’s mane is a powerhouse of nutrients and revered in traditional medicine. In recent years it has been investigated for its beneficial effects on cognitive health, with numerous studies supporting the claims made by traditional medicine.

 History

Holy basil is revered as a sacred plant that strengthens the vital life force or ‘prana’. When it is grown in the home, it is believed to confer wellbeing and spiritual benefits to the household.

Gotu kola has a long history of use in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine where it is considered one of the best herbs for supporting clarity, focus and memory. Known as the ‘herb of longevity’ it has been traditionally used to boost brainpower.

Matcha tea was traditionally used by Buddhist monks who found that drinking it before their afternoon meditations enabled them to be more focused.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) lion’s mane was used as a tonic for supporting overall health and longevity.

Benefits

Mental health: Studies suggest lion’s mane modulates the levels of specific neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, which play crucial roles in regulating mood, motivation, and stress response (2). Studies have found holy basil decreases stress hormone levels, lower levels are associated with improved mood and decreased anxiety (3, 4). Matcha has been shown to have anti-anxiety activity (5).

Cognitive health: Studies have found lion’s mane stimulates production of nerve growth factor (NGF) which helps to maintain the neurons, which are the brain cells responsible for helping us to process and transmit information (6). Small studies have noted benefits with gotu kola in improving overall cognition and memory (7). Other studies note improvements in age-related cognitive decline in the elderly (1). One study found that adults who took holy basil experienced a boost in cognitive function (8). Matcha consumption is linked to improvements in attention, reaction time, and memory (9).

Clarity and focus: Holy basil use has been associated with improved mental clarity and memory. Matcha is rich in antioxidants and the amino acid L-theanine which helps to support stable mental focus and alertness (10). Studies show that matcha decreases stress, and enhances attention and memory (11).

Key actives

Studies have shown that eugenol in holy basil helps to combat stress and enhances mental clarity (12). It has also been said to elevate mood and spirit.

Gotu kola contains essential oils and rosmarinic acid revered for their relaxation properties. Other components such as brahmoside and brahminoside, may be responsible for its anti-depressant effects; both have sedative actions (1).

Catechins, which are typical polyphenols contained in matcha tea, have been reported to have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects (13).

Lion’s mane fruiting body is rich in hericenones which are believed to contribute to the mushroom’s cognitive-enhancing properties.
