Meet the herb
Valerian is a perennial plant that is native to Europe. Although it has delicately scented flowers, it is the root that is mainly used in herbal preparations due to its powerful sedative compounds and volatile oils. Valerian has been revered as a medicinal plant for over 2000 years, particularly for its ability to promote tranquillity and better quality of sleep.
History
Valerian is a strong, aromatic herb with a history dating back to Roman times. It is traditionally used to calm nervous tension and ease the passage into sleep by reducing the time it takes to fall asleep.
Valerian root is often referred to as “nature’s Valium,” and people have used it since the Middle Ages to treat sleep disorders such as insomnia (1).
Benefits
Anxiety: A 2021 study found significant reductions in anxiety symptoms after taking valerian root 1 hour before bedtime for 1 month, compared with a placebo, it also improved sleep quality and depression (2).
Sleep: Research suggests that taking valerian root may reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep, as well as improve sleep quality and quantity. A 2020 review that included 60 studies concluded that valerian could be a safe and effective treatment to promote sleep and prevent associated disorders (1).
Menopause: Studies have looked into the benefits of valerian for postmenopausal women who were experiencing insomnia and noted significantly improved sleep quality compared with those who took a placebo (3). Valerian may also help to reduce hot flashes in menopausal and postmenopausal people (4, 5).
Key actives
Valerian’s bioactive compounds include valerenic acid, isovaleric acid and numerous antioxidants which are responsible for its relaxing and sedative effects.
Valerenic acid may support healthy GABA levels in the brain by inhibiting its breakdown, increasing the amount of GABA available in your body has sedative effects (6). The antioxidants hesperidin and linarin may also have sleep-enhancing properties.
Additionally, preliminary research suggests that valepotriates may have anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects in the body (1).
