Meet the herb

Turmeric is a popular herb derived from the roots of the plant curcuma longa, found mostly in India and Southern Asia. Turmeric has been used medically for purported anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, digestive complaints and liver conditions.

History

Turmeric has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years in ceremony and as medicine, and prized for its potent range of antioxidants and bioactive compounds. It has been used traditionally for many conditions including indigestion, upper respiratory infections and liver diseases (1).

It is perhaps one of the most researched herbs, with over 5000 peer reviewed studies looking at its benefits as a useful preventative and disease-modifying agent.

Benefits

Organic Fermented Turmeric Capsules

Anti-inflammatory: Considered one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine and is one of the world’s most well-known herbs for its anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric helps modulate inflammatory mediators such as cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX-2), prostaglandins, and leukotrienes (2).

Joint health: Several studies have shown turmeric has an ability to manage pain and inflammation in cases of arthritis or joint pain. Compared with placebo, there appears to be a benefit of turmeric on knee osteoarthritis pain and function. Based on a small number of studies the effects are similar to that of NSAIDs (3).

Digestive health: Turmeric is considered a digestive bitter and a carminative. It is a cholagogue, stimulating bile production in the liver and encouraging excretion of bile via the gallbladder (4)..

Liver health: It has been extensively studied for its hepatoprotective effects, and its curcuminoids may offer promise to prevent oxidative stress related liver disorder (5). Turmeric is under active evaluation as an anti-inflammatory agent, for the therapy of liver diseases (1).
