rhodiola root

Meet the herb

Rhodiola rosea also known as “golden root” or “arctic root” belongs to the plant family crassulaceae. It naturally grows in harsh environments, in high altitudes on sea cliffs and the crevices of mountain rocks in the Arctic regions of Europe and Asia and the eastern coast of North America (1). It has traditionally been used as an adaptogen and anti-fatigue agent.

History

Traditionally rhodiola has been used to increase physical endurance, work productivity, longevity, to treat fatigue, depression and nervous system disorders (2).

It has a long history of use in traditional medicine around the world including Russia, Scandinavia and other European countries. It is commonly reported to have been used by Scandinavian Vikings to enhance physical strength, and is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for vitality and longevity.

Benefits

Rhodiola root

Energy: Research suggests it has an anti-fatigue effect. Studies with chronic fatigue symptoms noted improvements–even after a single week–in stress, mood, concentration and more (3).

Sports performance: It may help the body to adapt to physical exercise, helping to support recovery as it is able to reduce lactate levels and skeletal muscle damage after intense exercise sessions (4). Other studies suggest that rhodiola can improve endurance by decreasing heart rate and perception of effort during exercise (5). Fermented rhodiola has been shown to protect against fatigue caused by strenuous exercise (6).

Cognitive health: It also has a nootropic effect, preventing mental fatigue and helping to support cognitive function. Studies have found that rhodiola exerts a notable anti-fatigue effect that increases mental performance and concentration in burnout patients (7).

Adaptogen: Rhodiola has been shown to improve symptoms of burnout which can occur with chronic stress. Studies have shown a clear improvement in symptoms like stress and depression associated with burnout with rhodiola use (8).

Rhodiola root contains over 140 active chemical compounds, many of which are unique to the plant, such as rosavin and salidroside.

Salidroside, the trans-cinnamyl alcohol glycoside compounds (rhodiolin, rosin, rosavin, rosarin, and rosiridin), and tyrosol are thought to be the most critical plant constituents needed for therapeutic activity (1).

Contraindications

There are some groups where caution is required: children and those nursing, pregnant (or considering pregnancy), and on medication or under medical supervision should consult their healthcare practitioner before using our supplements. Specific known contraindications (this list is not exhaustive):
