Meet the herb

Night time is a blend of passion flower, valerian and hops; these bio-activated herbs are designed to support a restful night.

Passion flower is a popular herb that gets its name from its beautiful flower. Famed for its calming effects, passion flower is considered a potent nervine herb.

Valerian is a perennial plant that is native to Europe. Although it has delicately scented flowers, it is the root that is mainly used in herbal preparations due to its powerful sedative compounds and volatile oils.

Hops grow at altitudes of up to 1500m in the hedgerows and forests of Europe. Hops have been used traditionally as a herbal remedy, and in beer manufacturing, and are revered for their sedative qualities.

 History

Passion flower has been traditionally used to treat nervous restlessness. Modern day herbalists recommend it as a powerful nervine tonic to ease stress, anxiety and to help the mind prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

Valerian is a strong, aromatic herb with a history dating back to Roman times. It is traditionally used to calm nervous tension and people have used it since the Middle Ages to treat sleep disorders such as insomnia (1).

Hops have historically been used to improve sleep quality and to induce deep sleep in conditions linked to nervous tension and sleeplessness, it is a soothing herb for the nervous system.

Key actives

Passion flower contains the alkaloid chrysin which has been found to increase amounts of the calming neurotransmitter GABA in the brain.

Valerian’s bioactive compounds include valerenic acid, isovaleric acid and numerous antioxidants are responsible for its relaxing and sedative effects.

Valerenic acid may support healthy GABA levels in the brain by inhibiting its breakdown, increasing the amount of GABA available in your body has sedative effects (6). The antioxidants hesperidin and linarin may also have sleep-enhancing properties.

It has been reported that the sedative activity of hops is mainly due to flavonoids such as bitter acids and xanthohumol, which are known to have anti-inflammatory and sedative effects (7). In particular, humulone has been reported to act directly on GABAA receptors (8).
