Meet the herb

Attention is a blend of lemon balm, bacopa, and gotu kola: these bio-activated herbs are designed to nourish the gut-brain link, and support active minds and those looking for improved focus.

Lemon balm is a fragrant sweet-smelling herb and a member of the mint family; it is grown globally and has been revered as a medicinal plant for over 2,000 years.

Bacopa is a small, succulent herb commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to enhance memory and as an aphrodisiac and all-round health tonic.

Gotu kola is an herb in the parsley family. The whole plant has been used for medicinal purposes, and it is one of the main herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine for revitalising nerves and brain cells. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it has been used for mood disorders including depression (1).

History

Lemon balm is a nervine herb that was used to support clarity and cognitive function in many ancient cultures and was praised by herbalists for its uplifting qualities. Also called the ‘elixir of life’, it is rich in many active plant compounds that help to support inner balance and peace.

Bacopa is a plant that has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It is sometimes called brahmi, and has traditionally been used for various ailments, but is best known as a neural tonic and memory enhancer (2). It was allegedly used by ancient Vedic scholars to memorise lengthy sacred hymns and scriptures (2).

Gotu kola has a long history of use in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine where it is considered one of the best herbs for supporting clarity, focus and memory. Known as the ‘herb of longevity’ it has been traditionally used to boost brainpower.

Benefits

Organic Fermented Attention

Mood

Traditionally, lemon balm has been used to treat anxiety and insomnia, with its mild sedative effects (3). It is generally associated with improvements in mood and/or cognitive performance (4).

Nootropic

Several randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have substantiated bacopa’s nootropic utility in humans (2). Studies have shown the benefits of bacopa in improving speed of processing visual information, learning rate, attention, and memory (5,6).

ADHD

Research suggests lemon balm may benefit hyperactivity, concentration, and impulsiveness in children (4), highlighting its potential benefits for ADHD. Research has also shown bacopa may help reduce ADHD symptoms such as restlessness, inattention and impulsivity (7), with cognitive, mood and sleep benefits (8).

Cognitive health

Small studies have noted benefits with gotu kola in improving overall cognition and memory (9). Other studies note favourable improvements in depression and age-related cognitive decline in the elderly (1).

Key actives

Gotu kola contains essential oils and rosmarinic acid revered for their relaxation properties. Other components such as brahmoside and brahminoside, may be responsible for its anti-depressant effects; both have sedative actions (1).

Lemon balm possesses a high amount of antioxidant activity through its chemical compounds including high number of flavonoids, rosmarinic acid, gallic acid, and phenolic contents (10).

A class of powerful compounds called bacosides in bacopa are believed to be responsible for its neuroprotective and antioxidant benefits (11).
