Meet the herb
Astragalus is one of the most widely used tonic herbs. It is derived from a bean or legume, and is sometimes known as milk vetch. Known as the ‘leader’ its root is rich in many active plant compounds and it has been traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support immunity and strengthen the body and its defences.
Astragalus is also considered a herbal adaptogen that can balance the body’s physiological response to stress during demanding periods, as well as offering seasonal support to maintain overall wellbeing.
History
Astragalus is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Mongolian medicine and is considered to have broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties.
The dried root of astragalus has been used as an immunomodulating agent for the treatment of common cold, diarrhoea, and fatigue for more than 2000 years (1).
Astragalus is one of the most widely used traditional Chinese herbal medicines. It is used as an immune stimulant, tonic, antioxidant, hepatoprotectant, diuretic, antidiabetic, and expectorant (2).
Benefits
Immunity: Astragalus has immunomodulatory effects (3) and may help enhance the immune system to prevent and fight bacterial and viral infections, including the common cold.
Adaptogen: Assists the body in managing stress more effectively, enabling you to navigate through life’s challenges with greater resilience and composure.
Heart health: Though research findings are mixed, astragalus may help improve heart function in patients with heart failure and reduce symptoms of myocarditis (4).
Diabetes: It is the most frequently prescribed herbal medicine for diabetic treatment in China. It generally lowers increased blood glucose and lipid levels, improves insulin sensitivity, and corrects several pathological indicators of diabetes and its complications (5).
Key actives
Astragalus is rich in specific polysaccharides, flavonoids, astragalosides and more than 40 saponins.
Flavonols are the most frequently isolated compounds. Among them quercetin, kaempferol, and their glycosides were found (6).
Polysaccharides are one of the major active ingredients with various important bioactivities, such as immunomodulation, antioxidant, anti-diabetes, antiviral, hepatoprotection, anti-inflammation, anti-atherosclerosis, hematopoiesis and neuroprotection (7).
